Programme

1. DAY 1: Mistérios Negros

   9.00/9.15 am: meeting point at your accommodation. Heading into the interior of the island, stop at the Mistérios Negros protected area for a circular hike of about 2h30 to 3h00, of moderate to hard difficulty and roughly 5 km. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, marvel at the Gruta do Natal lava tube, walk among the fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre and visit the magnificent empty volcano of Algar do Carvão.

2. DAY 2: Agualva

   9.00/9.15 am: meeting point at your accommodation. Heading to the north coast of the island, stop for the Agualva Bays trail, where along the coastal path you can see the many indented bays and admire the beauty of the black basalt cliffs. A hike of about 2h30, of moderate difficulty, not flat and climbing to 100 m; it is circular and roughly 3 km long. Picnic. In the afternoon, in the parish of Agualva, a walk to the Frechas waterfalls, where you can take a swim; then up to Serra do Cume to admire the largest volcanic caldera in the Azores.

3. DAY 3: Biscoitos

   9.00/9.15 am: meeting point at your accommodation. Heading to the north of the island, a hike along the Rocha do Chambre trail, through Japanese cedar forests and past a whole volcanic caldera next to geothermal wells. A circular hike of about 4 hours, roughly 9 km, of moderate difficulty with an elevation gain of around 235 m. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, explore the parish of Biscoitos, visiting the vineyards and the natural swimming pools formed by lava flows.
